Why does it seem like no merchants can be found using the Merchant Search API?

I have been playing with the Merchant Search API for awhile and I can't seem to get very many merchants returned other than the one provided in the example: cmu edctn materials cntr and a couple other random ones.

Why can't the merchant search find any matches for big merchants like amazon, google, apple, groupon..etc? Even with wild cards no results are coming back. The only big name merchant I tried that had a response was home depot.

In sand box, we have limited data availble due to which you can test limited use cases.  In production, we have merchant data availble for US merhcants only.
